In one sentence: Adults with no experience can absolutely learn guzheng — the 21 strings are tuned to a pentatonic scale, so you'll play a melody in lesson one. Central Conservatory of Music exams run Grades 1–9, roughly one grade a year. No need to buy an instrument at first.
Path
- Months 1–3: posture, picks, basic strokes, reading
- Months 4–6: tremolo, glissando, vibrato; 2–3 pieces
- Months 7–12: left-hand bends; Grade 1–2 exam
- Year 2+: a grade a year, ensemble playing
Erhu and pipa?
Both are feasible for adults but progress feels slower at first. If you want to play songs quickly, start with guzheng.
